Service has been an integral component of both my work in academics and industry. My work with Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) and theNorthern California Personnel Testing Council has especially influenced my continued commitment to service.
My service on the steering committee for Preparing Future Faculty (PFF), a national initiative sponsored by the Council of Graduate Schools and the Association of American Colleges & Universities, has fostered a deeper appreciation for the balance needed among teaching, research, and service responsibilities in an academic career. This initiative seeks to familiarize graduate students with the diversity of faculty member responsibilities in different types of colleges and universities. As a more senior graduate student, I conducted a teaching workshop geared toward the challenges of graduate student teaching. In collaboration with PFF’s chair, Dr. Elaine Justice, I also coordinated a workshop forum of ODU alumni who are now faculty. This workshop offered graduate students a “realistic job preview” from the perspective of educators hailing from diverse higher educational settings (e.g., liberal arts, community college, and research institutions, etc.).
My role as secretary for the Northern California Personnel Testing Council (regional association for the International Personnel Management Association and Assessment Council) was very rewarding. Collaborating with the Council’s board members and other officers, we organized an annual conference and monthly presentations where local members participate in professional development trainings and workshops surrounding personnel selection and assessment. This organization provided an excellent avenue for practitioners in public service to sharpen their skills and make resourceful connections with others in the field.
